New Holland ENG 277 – Engine Controller (ECM / Engine ECU): Injection Control Valve is failed

This fault code indicates an electrical failure—specifically an open or short circuit—in the Injection Control Valve (ICV) circuit. The ICV is a critical component of the CAPS (Cummins Accumulator Pump System) fuel injection pump, responsible for regulating the amount of fuel injected into the cylinders and controlling injection timing. The fault is specifically traced to the circuit operating on Pin A7 of the engine controller.

   Inspect the engine harness at the ECM, specifically checking Pin A7, for broken wires, corrosion, or short circuits.

   Perform a wiggle test: Start the engine (if possible) and gently wiggle the wires going directly into the Injection Control Valve coil. If the engine stumbles or shuts down, the ICV stator/coil has internal broken wires.

   Check the Transient Suppressor (a diode bolted to the side of the engine block). A failed diode can cause electrical feedback that triggers ICV circuit codes and damages the ECM.

   Perform an electronic 'click test' using a diagnostic service tool (like Cummins INSITE or CNH equivalent) to verify if the ECM can successfully actuate the valve.

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate ICV

   Locate the Injection Control Valve on the CAPS fuel pump distributor module.

   Inspect and disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the ICV. If the connector is brittle, melted, or damaged, it must be cut off and a new pigtail connector spliced in.

   Remove stator bolts

   Remove the four small bolts attaching the electrical ICV Stator to the mechanical ICV body.

   Remove stator

   Remove the failed stator.

   Install new stator

   Install the new ICV stator assembly onto the pump body and torque the four bolts to OEM specification.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Prime system and clear codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position to allow the lift pump to prime the system (approx. 30 seconds), and clear the inactive fault codes from the ECM.

   Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the engine no longer cuts out or dies.
