ENG 278

New Holland ENG 278 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU): Fuel Lift Pump is failed

Issue description

This code indicates that the low-pressure fuel lift pump (which supplies fuel from the tank to the high-pressure injection pump) has experienced a mechanical or electrical failure, resulting in fuel starvation, hard starting, or rough running conditions.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the fuel tank is not empty and check for fuel contamination or water in the sediment bowl.

  2. Inspect the lines and connections from the fuel lift pump inlet back to the fuel tank for kinks, rub marks, or leakage at Voss O-ring fittings.

  3. Check the fuel pick-up tube inside the fuel tank for cracks, plugging, or contact with the bottom/sidewalls of the tank.

  4. Check for a clogged fuel filter (filters should typically be replaced every 50-100 hours).

  5. Perform pressure and vacuum tests: verify the vacuum gap between the lift pump inlet and tank does not exceed 50.8 mm (2 inches) of Hg, and supply pressure is between 0.276 to 0.414 bars (4 to 6 psi).

  6. For electric lift pumps, verify voltage supply and check the wiring harness for open or short circuits at the engine controller.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the engine, set the parking brake, remove the key, and block the wheels. Clean the area around the fuel lift pump and sedimenter head thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.

  2. Disconnection

Place a catch pan under the pump. Disconnect the fuel inlet and outlet lines from the lift pump. If the pump is electric, disconnect the wiring harness connector.

  3. Removal

Remove the mounting bolts holding the lift pump to the engine block or filter housing. Remove the pump and discard the old gasket/O-rings.

  4. Installation

    Place a new, lubricated gasket and/or O-ring (e.g., O-ring part # 2830156) onto the new lift pump.

  5. Mounting

Position the lift pump onto the mounting surface and hand-thread the bolts. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque found in your specific engine's service manual.

  6. Reconnection

Reconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector.

  7. Bleeding

You must bleed the air out of the fuel injection system before attempting to start the engine. Open the bleeder screw on the filter housing and manually prime the system until fuel flows free of air bubbles.

  8. Testing

Start the engine, check for leaks around the new pump and fittings, and verify that the ENG 278 code clears.
