ENG 279

New Holland ENG 279 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Injection Control Valve current is out of range.

Issue description

The control module has detected an electrical anomaly—specifically low, no, or out-of-range current—on the return circuit for the Injection Control Valve (ICV). This is typically caused by an open circuit, a short circuit, or a failed electrical stator on the ICV itself.

Applies to these machines

  • TG210
  • TG230
  • TG255
  • TG285

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECM (Pin A7) and the Injection Control Valve for chafed wires, broken connections, or loose pins

  2. Disconnect the ICV electrical connector and test the ICV stator for continuity to check for an open or shorted coil

  3. Check the transient suppressor diode bolted to the engine block, which absorbs high-voltage surges; failure can cause ICV circuit errors

  4. Check for mechanical contamination in the ICV, as broken accumulator check valve springs can send metal debris into the valve, causing an electrical overcurrent/undercurrent reading

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's batteries to prevent electrical shorts or further ECM damage during the repair.

  2. Access the CAPS Pump

Locate the CAPS injection pump on the engine and identify the Injection Control Valve (ICV) assembly.

  3. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire near the connector, splice in a new electrical repair connector or install an ICV extension harness to relieve strain.

  4. Replace the ICV Stator

If the wiring is intact but the stator failed the resistance test, remove the 4 small bolts attaching the electrical stator to the ICV body and install a new stator.

  5. Replace the Complete ICV

If the valve body is contaminated with metal debris or mechanically failed, remove and replace the entire Injection Control Valve assembly.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the ICV electrical connector and the battery terminals.

  7. Clear and Test

Use a diagnostic service tool to clear the ENG 279 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that engine power is restored.
