New Holland ENG 281 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU): Front Pumping element is failed

The engine controller detects that the front plunger/element within the accumulator module of the CAPS fuel injection pump is failing to properly move fuel or build pressure, which can sometimes be caused by a 'blow-shut' condition.

   Check for related electrical codes (Fault Code 271 or 272) and resolve those first

   Inspect the fuel filter for plugging or heavy restriction which can starve the pump

   Verify the integrity of the engine wiring harness connecting to the CAPS pump for shorts or opens

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the battery and clear the work area around the engine's fuel system.

   Disconnect lines and harness

   Remove the high-pressure fuel lines and disconnect the engine harness from the injection pump.

   Remove pump

   Remove the CAPS fuel injection pump from the engine block.

   Repair or replace pump

   Send the pump to New Holland ReCon for repairs or replace entirely with a remanufactured unit.

   Install pump

   Install the new or ReCon CAPS fuel injection pump.

   Reconnect and bleed

   Reconnect all fuel lines and bleed the fuel system according to the specific tractor model's service manual.

   Test run

   Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes from the Engine ECU, and test run the machine to verify proper fuel pressure and ensure ENG 281 does not return.
