ENG 282

New Holland ENG 282 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / ENG / EDC: Rear Pumping element is failed.

Issue description

The engine controller detects that the rear pumping element of the CAPS fuel injection pump is not generating the expected pressure or has suffered a mechanical/electrical failure. This condition typically results in a severe engine power derate, rough idle, or the engine stalling completely. It is very frequently triggered by severe fuel starvation or air intrusion rather than an actual internal pump failure.

Check the cause

  1. Fuel Supply & Restriction Check: Check for restricted fuel flow or air ingress between the fuel tank and the CAPS pump.

  2. Inspect Fuel Lines: Check for kinking at the tank outlet. Inspect the fuel hoses to ensure they haven't gone 'mushy' or collapsed internally (often caused by hydraulic leaks dripping onto the rubber lines).

  3. Lift Pump Inspection: Verify the electric fuel lift pump (supply pump) is operating correctly and is not leaking. Measure the gear pump outlet pressure at the diagnostic fitting on the CAPS pump (e.g., should be around 120 psi at 2200 RPM).

  4. Solenoid 'Click Test': Use diagnostic software to perform a 'click test' on the front and rear pumping control valves. If the rear solenoid fails to click, the issue is electrical/actuator-related.

  5. Wiring & Sensor Check: Inspect the wiring harness, transient suppressor, and the accumulator pressure sensor for corrosion or rubbed-through insulation, which can cause erratic active/inactive codes.

Repair steps

  1. Filter & Supply Maintenance

    Start by replacing all fuel filters and bleeding the system. If the lift pump is leaking or failing, replace it. Clear the codes and test under load.

  2. Accumulator Replacement

    If the 'click test' fails or the solenoids are dead, replace the Accumulator module (which sits on top of the CAPS pump).

  3. CAPS Pump Replacement

    If fuel supply is perfect, the accumulator is functioning, and the code persists with a power derate, the internal rear pumping element has mechanically failed. The entire CAPS injection pump must be removed and replaced with a remanufactured unit.

  4. Crucial Step (Transient Suppressor)

    Whenever replacing the CAPS pump or accumulator, you MUST replace the Transient Suppressor. Failure to replace this electrical component can fry the electronics on the new pump and will void the manufacturer warranty.
