Issue description

This is a CAN bus communication error. It indicates that the engine controller is programmed to receive a specific multiplexed parameter (such as throttle position, remote throttle commands, or other shared sensor data) over the SAE J1939 datalink from another control module on the network. However, the expected data packet was not received within the required timeframe, resulting in a timeout.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes like ENG 286, ENG 287, or ENG 288 which may indicate the entire CAN bus is compromised.

  2. Visually inspect the J1939 datalink wiring harness connecting the Engine ECU to the Cab/Vehicle ECU and Armrest modules for chafing, pinching, or heat damage.

  3. With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance between the CAN High and CAN Low pins on the J1939 diagnostic port (should read approximately 60 ohms).

  4. Inspect the Engine ECU and Cab Controller connectors for pushed-out pins, moisture intrusion, or corrosion.

  5. Verify software configuration to ensure the Engine ECU and Vehicle ECU are programmed correctly, especially if a module was recently replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Disconnect the main harness at the Engine ECU and the transmitting module (usually the Cab or Armrest controller). Spray the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly reseat the connectors.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the resistance test failed, trace the J1939 CAN High (Yellow) and CAN Low (Green) wires. Repair any broken wires or shorts to ground/power using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques.

  4. Replace Terminating Resistors

    If a terminating resistor is found to be open (causing a 120-ohm network reading), locate the faulty resistor on the harness backbone and replace it.

  5. Software Flash / Module Replacement

    If the wiring and network resistance are perfectly intact, the module responsible for sending the multiplexed signal may have internally failed or dropped its programming. A dealer technician will need to use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to reflash the module or configure the network.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, clear the inactive fault codes, and start the engine to verify the ENG 285 code does not return.
