New Holland ENG 286 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Controller: J1939 Parameter was set to be multiplexed, but not available from all sources (config error)
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) is programmed to expect a specific multiplexed data parameter (such as throttle position or remote throttle commands) over the J1939 CAN bus network. However, the ECM is not receiving this data from all the configured source modules (such as the Armrest controller, Cab controller, or Vehicle ECU). This is primarily a software configuration mismatch or a network communication dropout.

Check the cause
Check for related J1939 communication fault codes (such as ENG 285, ENG 426, or ENG 427) that might indicate a broader network failure
Verify module configuration using the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to ensure multiplexing settings match across all controllers
Perform a CAN bus resistance test at the diagnostic connector with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms)
Inspect the J1939 CAN bus wiring harness for chafing, corrosion at connectors, or loose pins between the Engine ECM and cab controllers
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Plug the New Holland EST into the machine's diagnostic port and turn the key to the ON position (engine off).
Read and Document Codes
Pull all active and stored fault codes from every module on the network to isolate which specific module is failing to broadcast its multiplexed parameter.
Reconfigure Modules
If the issue is purely a "config error" (as the code description states), use the EST to re-flash or update the configuration files of the Engine ECM and the source module so they are properly paired to share multiplexed data.
Test the Network
If the configuration is correct, disconnect the battery and perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the ECM and the source module. Repair any open circuits or shorts to ground/power.
Check Terminating Resistors
If the CAN bus resistance is 120 ohms (instead of 60 ohms), locate and replace the failed or missing CAN terminating resistor.
Clear and Verify
Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the EST, and cycle the key. Start the engine and verify that ENG 286 does not return.
