New Holland ENG 287 – Engine Controller (ENG) / Engine ECU: Multiplexing throttle parameter and a data error was received - data invalid
Issue description
The Engine Controller (ECM) is receiving invalid data over the J1939 CAN bus regarding the throttle position parameter. The engine ECU expects a valid multiplexed signal from the module controlling the throttle (such as the Armrest module or Cab controller), but the data packet received is corrupted, out of range, or invalid.
Applies to these machines

- T7000
- T8000
- T9 Series
- TJ Series
- Magnum
- MX/TG Series

- CX8090 Elevation Tier 4A
Check the cause
Check for accompanying codes in the Armrest or Cab modules (e.g., Armrest 18001/18002 or 18003/18004 for throttle voltage errors)
Inspect the physical condition of the hand and foot throttle potentiometers for damage or jamming
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the throttle controls, armrest/cab controller, and Engine ECU for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or chafed wires
Perform a voltage sweep test on the throttle potentiometer to ensure there are no dead spots throughout its range of motion
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the OEM service tool (e.g., CNH Electronic Service Tool) to read all active and stored fault codes across the Engine and Armrest modules.
Test the Circuit
Disconnect the harness at the hand/foot throttle potentiometer. Use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (usually 5V) and has a good ground.
Check CAN Bus Integrity
If the sensor has power and ground, check the J1939 CAN bus lines between the cab controller and the Engine ECU for proper resistance (typically 60 ohms across the network) and continuity. Repair any broken or shorted CAN wires.
Replace the Potentiometer
If the wiring and CAN bus are intact, but the throttle potentiometer fails a resistance/voltage sweep test (or if the Armrest module is reporting a direct short/open on the throttle pin), replace the throttle potentiometer.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect all components. Turn the key switch on, clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool, and cycle the throttle to verify the ENG 287 code does not return.
