New Holland ENG 288 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU): Multiplexing remote throttle parameter and a data error was received - data invalid.

Issue description

J1939 CAN bus communication error indicating the Engine Control Unit is successfully receiving the multiplexed network message for the remote throttle parameter, but the data contained within that message is flagged as invalid or out-of-range. This typically happens when the module responsible for reading the remote throttle (such as the Cab Controller or Armrest Module) detects a failure at the sensor level (like a short or open circuit) and subsequently broadcasts an invalid data signal to the engine over the network.

Check the cause

  1. Check for localized Armrest/Cab codes (such as Armrest 18002, 18003, or 18004) that pinpoint the exact electrical failure

  2. Visually inspect the remote throttle potentiometer/rotary sensor and its linkage for physical damage, binding, or debris

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the remote throttle sensor and the cab/armrest controller for chafed wires, moisture, or backed-out pins

  4. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage or resistance sweep of the remote throttle sensor while moving it through its full range of motion, looking for dead spots or erratic jumps

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

    Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify that ENG 288 is currently active and to monitor the live data for the remote throttle position.

  2. Address Source Module Faults

    If the Armrest module is reporting a short or open circuit at the throttle sensor, troubleshoot that specific circuit first. The ENG 288 code will automatically clear once the engine receives valid data again.

  3. Clean Connections

    Disconnect the remote throttle sensor. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease. Reconnect and check if the fault clears.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the sensor fails the multimeter sweep test (showing an internal open or short), replace the remote throttle position sensor.

  5. Repair the Harness

    If the sensor tests good, perform a continuity test on the wiring harness from the sensor pigtail back to the Armrest/Cab controller. Repair any broken wires or replace the damaged harness section.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    After replacing the sensor or repairing the wiring, turn the key switch on, clear the inactive fault codes, and operate the remote throttle to ensure the engine responds correctly and the code does not return.
