New Holland ENG 294 – ENGINE (ENG) Controller / ECU: Hydraulic Fan Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor Voltage is too low.

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the hydraulic oil temperature sensor that has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold, indicating a short to ground in the sensor's wiring circuit, a completely failed (internally shorted) sensor, or severe corrosion bridging the connector pins.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the hydraulic oil temperature sensor for chafed wires rubbing against the chassis or engine block.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion.

  3. Reference Voltage Test: With the key ON and the sensor disconnected, check for a 5V reference signal at the harness connector. If voltage drops to 0V when plugged in, the sensor is internally shorted. If 0V when disconnected, the wiring is shorted to ground or the ECU pin is damaged.

  4. Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the sensor's terminals. An internally shorted sensor will show near-zero resistance. Compare to the OEM temperature/resistance chart.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the hydraulic system to cool completely to avoid burns from hot oil.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the hydraulic oil temperature sensor. Depending on the model, it is typically threaded into the tandem hydraulic pump, the hydraulic valve block, or the hydraulic reservoir.

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor with brake cleaner to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the sensor is removed.

  4. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

  5. Remove the Sensor

    Place a small catch pan under the sensor to catch residual hydraulic fluid. Use a wrench to carefully unthread and remove the faulty sensor.

  6. Install the New Part

    Thread the new sensor into the port. If it uses an O-ring, ensure it is seated properly; if it requires thread sealant, apply a hydraulic-safe sealant. Tighten to the specific OEM torque spec for your machine.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Fluid Check

    Check the hydraulic fluid level and top off if any significant amount was lost during the swap.

  9. Clear Codes

    Turn the key ON and use the machine's diagnostic display (e.g., IntelliView) or an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the ENG 294 fault code. Start the machine and verify the code does not return and the hydraulic fan operates normally.
