ENG 2973

New Holland ENG 2973 – ENG (Engine Controller / Engine ECU): Intake Manifold 1 Pressure data invalid.

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or implausible signal from the Intake Manifold Pressure Sensor (commonly referred to as the Boost Pressure Sensor or MAP sensor). This condition can lead to rough idling, surging, loss of power, poor fuel economy, or a rich/lean fuel condition because the engine cannot accurately calculate the required fuel delivery based on boost pressure.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the Intake Manifold Pressure Sensor on the intake manifold. Inspect the sensor body and the 4-pin electrical connector for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Wiring & Harness Check: Check the wiring harness leading to the sensor for chafing, open circuits, or shorts to ground/voltage.

  3. Voltage Test: Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage and has a solid ground from the Engine ECU.

  4. Mechanical Inspection: Check the intake manifold and turbocharger plumbing for boost leaks, cracked hoses, or blockages that could cause genuinely erratic pressure fluctuations.

  5. Sensor Contamination: Remove the sensor and check the tip for excessive soot or oil buildup, which can block the sensing element and cause invalid data readings.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool.

  2. Locate the Intake Manifold Pressure Sensor (Boost Pressure Sensor) on the intake manifold.

  3. Depress the locking tab and disconnect the 4-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the manifold.

  5. Carefully pull the sensor straight out of its mounting port.

  6. Clean the mounting port on the intake manifold, ensuring no debris falls into the intake.

  7. Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor lightly with clean engine oil to prevent tearing.

  8. Insert the new sensor into the manifold and tighten the retaining bolt to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  9. Reconnect the 4-pin electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  10. Connect a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 2973 fault code, then start the engine and verify that the code does not return under load.
