New Holland ENG 298 – Engine Control Module (ECM): OEM Pressure Sensor Voltage is too low.

The signal voltage from the OEM pressure sensor has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold expected by the controller. This is typically caused by a short circuit to ground in the sensor signal wire, a failed pressure sensor, or an internal failure within the engine controller.

   Inspect the OEM pressure sensor, the ECM connectors, and the OEM wiring harness for physical damage, moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

   Disconnect the OEM harness from both the pressure sensor and the ECM. Measure the resistance from the sensor signal wire (typically Pin 48 on the OEM harness connector) to all other pins in the harness. If the resistance is less than 100k ohms, there is a short circuit in the harness.

   Disconnect harness

   Turn the key switch OFF. Disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM.

   Test ECM response

   Install a jumper wire between the signal pin (Pin 48) and the return/ground pin (Pin 20) directly on the OEM side of the ECM.

   Read fault codes

   Turn the key switch ON and read the active fault codes using your diagnostic tool. If the opposite fault code (ENG 297: OEM Pressure Sensor Voltage is too high) becomes active, the ECM is functioning correctly and the issue lies in the OEM pressure sensor itself or the wiring harness (replace the sensor). If ENG 298 remains active despite the jumper wire, the ECM has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

   Reassemble and verify

   Once the faulty component (sensor, harness, or ECM) is replaced, reconnect all components. Start the engine and let it idle for 1 minute. Verify that Fault Code 298 has become inactive, then clear the inactive codes from the ECM memory.
