New Holland ENG 299 – Engine Controller (ECM / EDC7): Engine Shutdown by other than keyswitch (i.e. via data bus command)

This is an informational code indicating that the engine was shut down because the Engine Control Module (ECM) received a shutdown command over the CAN data bus from another control module on the machine (such as the vehicle controller, transmission controller, or implement controller) forcing a safety or protective shutdown.

   Scan all modules using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to identify the module that requested the shutdown

   Check safety interlocks, including the operator presence (seat) switch, PTO switch, and park brake switch

   Monitor CAN bus communication for intermittent errors between the engine ECM and main vehicle controller

   Check critical fluid levels and temperatures (transmission and hydraulic) for extreme conditions that could trigger a protective shutdown

   Connect diagnostic tool

   Connect the CNH EST diagnostic laptop to the machine's diagnostic port.

   Perform system scan

   Perform a full system scan to retrieve all active and stored fault codes across all ECUs.

   Diagnose root cause

   Ignore ENG 299 temporarily and focus on diagnosing and repairing the root cause indicated by the other modules (e.g., replacing a faulty seat switch, repairing a damaged CAN wire, or addressing a transmission overheat condition).

   Monitor live data

   If no other codes are present, use the EST to monitor the live data states of the safety switches (Seat, PTO, Neutral, Park Brake). Have the operator simulate the conditions under which the shutdown occurred to see if a switch is dropping out intermittently.

   Replace or repair components

   Replace any faulty safety switches or repair damaged harness wiring as identified in your live data testing.

   Clear fault codes

   Once the root cause is repaired, clear the fault codes in all modules, including the ENG 299 code in the Engine ECM.

   Test drive

   Test drive and operate the machine under load to verify the unexpected shutdown does not return.
