New Holland ENG 3008 – Engine ECU: Engine Coolant Temperature - Signal Below Range Minimum

Issue description

The engine's control module is receiving a voltage signal from the coolant temperature sensor that falls below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition is almost always caused by an open circuit, a disconnected sensor plug, a broken wire in the harness, or an internally failed sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wire harness visually and ensure it is securely connected to the coolant temperature sensor on the engine. A disconnected plug is a primary cause of an open circuit code.

  2. Disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor and measure sensor resistance using a multimeter across the sensor's pins (or between pin 1 and ground). If resistance reads as an open circuit (infinite) or is vastly out of specification (e.g., ~323Ω at 80°C), the sensor is faulty.

  3. If the sensor tests good, verify circuit continuity from the sensor connector back to the Machine Electronic Control Unit (MECU/ECU). Look for chafed wires, broken connections, or poor pin seating at the ECU harness.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool completely to prevent severe burns from hot, pressurized coolant.

  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Locate the engine coolant temperature sensor on the engine block or thermostat housing.

  4. Depress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the sensor.

  5. Place a catch pan under the engine. You can either partially drain the coolant system or be prepared to quickly swap the sensor to minimize fluid loss.

  6. Unscrew and remove the faulty coolant temperature sensor using a deep socket or wrench.

  7. Thread the new OEM coolant temperature sensor into the port and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  8. Reconnect the electrical wiring harness until the locking tab clicks into place.

  9. Top off the engine coolant to replace any fluid lost during the swap.

  10. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check for leaks around the new sensor.

  11. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the inactive ENG 3008 fault code, or allow the system to self-clear after a few operating cycles.
