New Holland ENG 3009 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / EDC): Coolant Temperature Sensor -(via CAN) No Signal

Issue description

Communication failure where the engine control system is not receiving any data from the engine coolant temperature sensor. The underlying condition is typically an open circuit, a disconnected sensor, a failed sensor, or a CAN bus communication error preventing the temperature data from reaching the controller.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the coolant temperature sensor on the engine block or thermostat housing to ensure it is physically connected.

  2. Inspect the 2-pin electrical connector and the wiring harness leading back to the Engine ECU for chafing, corrosion, or broken wires.

  3. Use a multimeter to check the resistance across the sensor's pins. An open circuit (infinite resistance) confirms the sensor has failed internally.

  4. Verify that the ECU is supplying the correct reference voltage to the connector. If voltage is present but the signal is dropping out, check the CAN bus network lines.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts. Allow the engine to cool completely to avoid burns from hot coolant.

  2. Drain Coolant

    Drain a small amount of coolant from the radiator petcock to drop the fluid level below the sensor port, preventing spills.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the 2-pin electrical harness from the coolant temperature sensor. Use a deep socket or wrench to carefully unscrew the faulty sensor from the engine block/thermostat housing.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new coolant temperature sensor into the port. (Note: Many of these sensors use a 1/2" x 14 NPTF thread, which seals as it tightens; do not over-torque).

  5. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  6. Refill and Test

    Refill any lost engine coolant. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check for leaks around the new sensor.

  7. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool or the machine's onboard diagnostic menu to clear the ENG 3009 fault code from the Engine ECU.
