New Holland ENG 3016 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Temperature Signal - Signal Below Range Min.

Issue description

The control module is seeing a voltage that is too low, which typically indicates a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness or an internally shorted sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the fuel temperature sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or a pinched harness that could be shorting the signal wire to the ground wire or the engine block.

  2. Disconnect the 2-pin connector from the sensor and measure the reference voltage across the harness pins with the key ON (engine off). It should be approximately 4.75V to 5.0V. If missing, the harness is shorted or broken.

  3. Measure the resistance across the two pins on the sensor itself. At 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit), it should read approximately 2.5 kOhms (2500 Ohms). A reading near zero indicates an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes to the ECU.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    The fuel temperature sensor is typically threaded directly into the fuel filter housing, the primary fuel manifold lines, or near the high-pressure fuel pump.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Depress the locking tab to unplug the 2-pin sealed oval electrical connector. Using a 19mm wrench or deep socket, unscrew the sensor from the housing. Note: Have a rag ready, as a small amount of diesel fuel will leak out.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading (the thread pitch is M14 x 1.5). Tighten it securely with the 19mm wrench.

  5. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes

    Turn the key on. The active code may move to an inactive/stored state. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or EASY diagnostic tool to clear the stored fault codes from the ECU.
