New Holland ENG 3021 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Boost Pressure Sensor - (via CAN) No Signal

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication with the Boost Pressure Sensor (often a combined MAP/IAT sensor) over the CAN bus network, or the signal has timed out. Because the ECU relies on this sensor to measure the air pressure and temperature entering the intake manifold, a missing signal will prevent the engine from properly regulating the air-fuel ratio and turbocharger boost, often resulting in a derate or loss of power.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the boost pressure sensor for physical damage, corrosion, bent pins, or moisture ingress.

  2. Check the CAN bus communication lines between the sensor and the Engine ECU for continuity, open circuits, or short circuits to ground/power.

  3. Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) and has a solid ground connection.

  4. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or EASY diagnostic tool to monitor live data and confirm if the signal is completely missing or intermittently dropping out.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the Boost Pressure Sensor (MAP/IAT sensor) mounted directly on the engine's intake manifold.

  3. Disconnect

    Carefully depress the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull it away from the sensor.

  4. Removal

    Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the manifold. Gently pull the sensor straight out of its port.

  5. Clean

    Wipe the mounting surface on the intake manifold to ensure it is free of soot, oil, and debris.

  6. Installation

    Lightly lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean engine oil. Push the new sensor into the manifold port until it is fully seated.

  7. Secure

    Install and tighten the retaining bolt(s) to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  8. Reconnect

    Reconnect the electrical wiring harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks securely into place.

  9. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3021 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that boost pressure registers normally.
