New Holland ENG 3022 – Engine Controller / Engine ECU: Boost Pressure Sensor - Signal Not Plausible

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit is receiving a voltage or pressure reading from the intake manifold boost pressure sensor that does not make logical sense when compared to other engine operating parameters (such as engine speed, load, or the atmospheric pressure sensor readings).

Check the cause

  1. Check the 4-pin electrical connector at the boost pressure sensor for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness routing back to the Engine ECU for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to battery voltage.

  3. Compare the boost pressure sensor reading with the atmospheric pressure sensor reading using a diagnostic service tool (engine off, key on). If they do not match, the sensor is likely skewed.

  4. Verify there are no physical intake leaks, blocked intercooler pipes, or turbocharger wastegate malfunctions that could cause actual erratic boost pressures.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery

    This prevents electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the boost pressure sensor.

    It is typically mounted directly on the intake manifold or on the charge air pipe just after the boost intercooler.

  3. Depress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor.

  4. Unbolt or unthread the faulty boost pressure sensor from the intake manifold.

  5. Clean the mounting port on the manifold

    Ensure no debris falls into the engine intake.

  6. Install the new boost pressure sensor

    Ensure the integrated temperature probe/O-ring is seated correctly if applicable.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks into place.

  8. Reconnect the battery.

  9. Use a CNH diagnostic service tool (or a compatible CAN-bus DTC eraser) to clear the inactive fault codes from the Engine ECU memory.

    Start the engine and verify the code does not return under load.
