New Holland ENG 3033 – Engine Controller: Oil Temperature Sensor - Signal Not Plausible (Compared with Coolant Temperature)

This fault code indicates a plausibility error between the engine oil temperature and the engine coolant temperature. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors both sensors and flags the oil temperature signal as 'not plausible' if it deviates too far from the coolant temperature sensor reading, especially during cold starts or warm-up phases.

   Perform a cold soak comparison: Let the machine sit overnight, then use a diagnostic scan tool to read both the Engine Oil Temperature and Engine Coolant Temperature. They should read within a few degrees of each other.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the Oil Temperature Sensor for chafed wires, corrosion in the pins, or signs of an open/short circuit.

   Check the Coolant Temperature Sensor to ensure it is not providing skewed data, as this is a comparative fault.

   Test the resistance of the oil temperature sensor with a multimeter and compare it against OEM specifications for the ambient temperature.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the Engine Oil Temperature Sensor on the engine block.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Place a catch pan underneath to catch any minor oil loss, then unscrew the faulty oil temperature sensor from the engine block.

   Install

   Thread the new sensor into the port. Torque it to the manufacturer's specification (standard torque for FPT temperature sensors is typically 20 - 30 N·m).

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Clear and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3033 fault code. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature to ensure the CAN plausibility check passes and the code does not return.
