ENG 3035

New Holland ENG 3035 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Oil Temperature Sensor - Signal Below Range Min.

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the engine oil temperature sensor to the controller has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This is most commonly caused by a short to ground in the sensor's wiring circuit, a completely failed sensor (internal short), or severe connector damage.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the oil temperature sensor to the Engine ECM for pinched wires, melted insulation, or chafing against the engine block (short to ground).

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins on both the harness side and the sensor side for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Check the sensor's internal resistance with a multimeter. A reading of zero ohms (continuity) indicates the sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  4. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and probe the harness connector to ensure the ECM is supplying the correct reference voltage to the sensor circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the oil temperature sensor on the engine block. Note: On many FPT engines, CNH uses a standardized multi-purpose sensor for water, fuel, or oil temperature.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Depress the locking tab on the electrical connector and unplug it. Using a deep socket or wrench, carefully unscrew the faulty sensor. Have a shop rag ready to catch any residual oil that may weep from the port.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM temperature sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading.

  5. Torque to Spec

    Tighten the oil temperature sensor to 20 - 30 N·m (15 - 22 lb ft).

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness until the locking tab clicks securely. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Verification

    Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Verify that the oil temperature reads correctly on the dash/monitor and that fault code ENG 3035 changes to an inactive state or clears entirely.
