New Holland ENG 3036 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Oil Temperature Sensor - (via CAN) No Signal

The control module is not receiving a valid data signal from the engine oil temperature sensor over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The sensor's data packet is missing, timing out, or corrupted on the network.

   Check if other CAN bus or sensor codes are active to determine if the issue is a damaged CAN network line or ECU grounding issue rather than the sensor itself.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the oil temperature sensor for chafing, rodent damage, vibration fractures, or water intrusion.

   Verify the battery condition and main earth straps, as poor grounds or voltage drops are a primary cause of CAN communication dropouts.

   Use a multimeter to check the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the sensor connector and the Engine ECU.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to protect the ECU and CAN network.

   Clean the Connection

   Disconnect the plug at the oil temperature sensor. Clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner to remove any corrosion. Apply dielectric grease to prevent future water intrusion.

   Repair Harness

   If wiring damage is found during the diagnostic phase, splice in a connector repair kit using heat-shrink tubing to ensure a weather-tight seal.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring and CAN network test perfectly but the sensor still fails to broadcast a signal, the internal circuitry of the sensor has failed. Unscrew the old sensor from the engine block and install the replacement.

   Clear the Code

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (such as CNH EST or Jaltest) to clear the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) from the Engine ECU memory.

   Verify Operation

   Start the engine and verify that the oil temperature reading is registering correctly on the dashboard or diagnostic interface.
