New Holland ENG 3038 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Constant Engine RPM Activate / Select Switch Short circuit to Ground
Issue description
The control module has detected that the electrical circuit for the switch used to activate or select the constant engine speed (RPM) memory is shorted to ground. This typically happens when the signal wire's insulation has rubbed through and is touching the machine's metal chassis, or if the switch itself has failed internally and is bridging the signal directly to the ground circuit.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the Constant Engine RPM switch on the armrest/CommandArc console for physical damage, sticking buttons, or liquid spills that may have shorted the internal contacts.
Harness Isolation: Disconnect the electrical connector at the back of the Constant Engine RPM switch.
Check for Internal Switch Short: With the switch disconnected, check for continuity between the switch's signal pin and ground pin. If there is continuity when the switch is not being pressed, the switch is internally shorted and must be replaced.
Check for Wiring Harness Short: With the switch still disconnected, turn the key ON and check the signal wire on the harness side. If the fault code remains active (or if you measure continuity to chassis ground on the signal wire), the short is in the wiring harness between the console and the Engine ECU.
Pin/Connector Check: Inspect the harness connectors at the switch and at the Engine ECU for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the circuit to ground.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.
If the switch is faulty:
Carefully pry up the trim panel on the armrest or side console where the Constant Engine RPM switch is mounted.
Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the back of the switch.
Depress the retaining tabs on the sides of the switch body and push it out of the mounting panel.
Snap the new OEM Constant Engine RPM switch into the panel.
Reconnect the wiring harness, reinstall the trim panel, and reconnect the battery.
Start the tractor/combine, clear the inactive fault codes via the instrument cluster, and test the constant engine speed function to verify the repair.
Trace the switch's signal wire down the armrest harness, through the cab floor, and out to the Engine ECU.
If the wiring harness is faulty:
Look for pinch points, especially where the harness routes near the cab suspension mounts or engine block.
Once the chafed or melted section of wire is found, cut out the damaged section.
Splice in a new section of wire using weatherproof heat-shrink butt connectors or solder and marine-grade heat shrink.
Wrap the repaired section in protective wire loom and secure it away from sharp metal edges with zip ties.
