ENG 3044

New Holland ENG 3044 – Engine ECU: Vehicle Speed Sensing - Signal Above Range Max.

Issue description

This code indicates that the Engine Control Module is receiving a voltage or frequency signal from the vehicle speed sensor that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold. This is typically caused by a short circuit to power in the sensor wiring, a faulty sensor internally shorting, or an incorrect sensor reading due to mechanical interference.

Applies to these machines

  • T8.xxx Series
  • CR9090
  • CX8080 Elevation
  • CX8090 Elevation
  • Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)

Check the cause

  1. Locate the vehicle speed sensor (typically mounted on the transmission housing or final drive) and inspect the sensor housing for physical damage.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the speed sensor back to the Engine ECU. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could cause a short to battery/power.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent terminals.

  4. Using a multimeter, check the reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector. Verify that the signal wire is not shorted to a 12V/5V power source.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

Locate the transmission/vehicle speed sensor. Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from falling into the transmission housing.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the electrical pigtail. Remove the retaining bolt(s) and carefully pull the sensor out of the housing.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Insert the sensor into the port, ensuring it seats fully.

  5. Secure and Reconnect

Tighten the retaining bolt to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the ENG 3044 fault code from the Engine ECU.

  7. Test Drive

Operate the machine and monitor the speedometer/dashboard to ensure vehicle speed is registering correctly and the fault code does not return.
