New Holland ENG 3045 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: Vehicle Speed Sensing - Signal Below Range Min.

The control module is receiving a voltage or frequency signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) that falls below the minimum acceptable threshold. This is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground, a failing sensor, or excessive distance/debris between the sensor and the tone ring.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the vehicle speed sensor to the Engine ECM for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation.

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor terminal tension. Repeat this check at the ECM connector.

   Remove the vehicle speed sensor and inspect the magnetic pickup tip for metal shavings or debris that can distort or block the signal.

   Use a multimeter to check for continuity in the signal wire and ensure there is no short to ground.

   Park and secure machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the battery disconnect switch.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the vehicle speed sensor, which is typically mounted on the rear of the transmission housing or near the differential.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the sensor.

   Remove retaining bolt

   Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the transmission housing.

   Remove old sensor

   Carefully pull the old sensor out of the bore. (Have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may seep out depending on the mounting location).

   Clean mounting surface

   Clean the mounting surface and the bore to ensure the new sensor seats at the correct depth.

   Lubricate O-ring

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with a small amount of clean transmission fluid.

   Install new sensor

   Insert the new vehicle speed sensor and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specifications.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

    Test and clear code

    Turn on the battery power, connect a diagnostic tool, clear the ENG 3045 fault code, and test drive the machine to verify the speedometer works and the code does not return.
