ENG 3051

New Holland ENG 3051 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Battery Voltage to ECM too High

Issue description

The electrical charging system is overcharging, and the voltage being supplied to the Engine Control Module (ECM) has exceeded the safe upper limit (typically anything consistently above 14.7V - 15.0V).

Applies to these machines

  • T7 Series
  • T8.xxx Series
  • B90B
  • B110B
  • B115B
  • LB110
  • LB115
  • Case 580 Super N
  • Case 590
  • Case 695
  • CR9090
  • CX8080
  • CX8090 Elevation
  • E385
  • E485

Check the cause

  1. Test battery voltage with the engine running at governed RPM to see if it exceeds 15.0V, indicating an overcharging alternator.

  2. Inspect the alternator governor (voltage regulator) for defects, which is the primary cause of this code.

  3. Check the wiring harness between the alternator, battery, and ECM for external short circuits introducing higher voltage.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the machine on level ground, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Locate the Alternator

Identify the alternator on the engine block and inspect its connections.

  3. Replace the Voltage Regulator or Alternator

Replace alternator governor device or alternator. If your specific alternator model features a serviceable external or bolt-on internal voltage regulator, remove and replace just the regulator. If the regulator is non-serviceable or the alternator shows other signs of wear (bad bearings, burnt windings), replace the entire alternator assembly.

  4. Reinstall and Tension

Mount the new alternator or regulator. Reconnect all electrical terminals (B+, field, ground) securely. If the alternator was removed, reinstall the serpentine/drive belt and tension it to OEM specifications.

  5. Verify Repair

Reconnect the battery and start the engine. Measure the voltage at the battery again; it should now read within the normal charging range (typically 13.5V to 14.4V).

  6. Clear Codes

Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 3051 historical fault code from the ECM.
