New Holland ENG 3055 – Engine Control Module (ECM / Engine ECU): Vehicle Speed Sensing (Tacho) - PWM Average Frequency Below Limit

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) that falls below the minimum expected frequency threshold. This typically means the sensor is failing to accurately read the rotational speed of the transmission tailshaft gear, or there is a disruption in the signal circuit preventing the correct frequency from reaching the ECM.

   Visually inspect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) at the rear of the transmission housing, including the connector and wiring harness, for physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections.

   Test the sensor circuit for continuity and verify that there are no shorts to ground or battery voltage drops between the VSS and the Engine ECM.

   Verify the sensor is securely mounted; a loose sensor can increase the air gap between the magnetic pickup and the transmission gear, causing a weak or low-frequency signal.

   Check if the ABS or cruise control systems are malfunctioning, as these rely on the same vehicle speed data. Multiple system failures strongly point to the sensor or its main harness.

   Preparation

   Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the Vehicle Speed Sensor on the transmission tailshaft or rear transmission housing.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Carefully depress the locking tab on the VSS electrical connector and pull it free from the sensor.

   Remove the Sensor

   Remove the retaining bolt or clip holding the sensor in place. Gently twist and pull the sensor out of the transmission housing. (Have a shop rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port).

   Install the New Sensor

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with a small amount of clean transmission fluid. Insert the new sensor into the housing and secure it with the retaining bolt.

   Reconnect and Test

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring it clicks into place. Reconnect the battery, clear the active ENG 3055 fault code using a diagnostic tool, and test drive the machine to verify the speedometer works and the code does not return.
