New Holland ENG 3057 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout of CAN Message High Resolution Wheel Speed

The engine controller is no longer receiving the high-resolution wheel speed data packet over the CAN bus (Controller Area Network). When the signal times out, the engine cannot properly adjust parameters that rely on ground speed (such as cruise control, engine droop control, or automated shifting).

   Check for Companion Codes: Look for other CAN bus timeout codes (such as ENG 3058). If multiple modules are timing out, the issue is likely a damaged CAN bus backbone rather than a single sensor.

   Inspect the CAN Bus Harness: Trace the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Transmission/Vehicle Dynamics controller. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins at the connectors.

   Inspect the Wheel Speed Sensor: Locate the wheel speed sensor (typically mounted on the transmission output shaft, axle housing, or wheel hub depending on the model). Check the sensor's pigtail connector for physical damage, water intrusion, or debris buildup on the magnetic pickup.

   Test the Sensor Circuit: Use a multimeter to test the sensor circuit for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to battery voltage.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes while servicing the CAN bus or ECU wiring.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken or shorted CAN wire between the transmission speed sensor and the ECM, repair the harness using OEM-approved splicing techniques and heat-shrink tubing.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring is intact but the sensor has failed internally: Disconnect the wiring harness from the wheel speed sensor. Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place. Carefully pull the old sensor out of its bore (clean the area first to prevent dirt from falling into the transmission/axle). Lubricate the O-ring on the new OEM sensor and press it into the bore. Install and tighten the retaining bolt, then reconnect the wiring harness.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible heavy-duty scanner (like JPRO) to clear the ENG 3057 fault code. Test drive the machine to verify that the ECM is receiving the wheel speed signal and the code does not return.
