New Holland ENG 3059 – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM After run was Interrupted

The Engine Control Module (ECM) lost power unexpectedly before it could complete its normal shutdown sequence (the "after-run" process where it saves data and parks actuators), or the main power relay supplying Terminal 30 of the ECM is physically stuck closed or has failed.

   Verify operator habits: Ensure the master battery disconnect switch is not being turned off immediately after turning the ignition key off, as the ECM requires time to complete its after-run cycle.

   Test the ECM Main Power Relay: Check pins 30 and 87 for continuity. If there is continuity when the relay is unpowered, it is stuck closed.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the battery, the key switch, and the ECM (specifically the Terminal 30 circuit) for external shorts, corrosion, or open circuits.

   Check battery voltage and alternator condition, as severe voltage drops during shutdown can interrupt the ECM.

   Power Down

   Park the machine on a level surface, turn the ignition key to the OFF position, and wait at least 2 minutes to ensure all modules have powered down.

   Access the Fuse/Relay Panel

   Locate the main electrical distribution box (location varies by model, often in the cab console or engine bay).

   Replace the Main Relay

   Pull the ECM Main Power Relay. If it failed the diagnostic continuity test (stuck closed) or shows signs of heat damage/corrosion, replace it with a new OEM relay.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the relay is functional but the code persists, trace the Terminal 30 wire to the ECM. Repair any damaged wires or clean corroded bullet connectors/diodes in the harness.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect power, turn the key ON, and use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the machine's diagnostic display to clear the inactive fault codes.

   Verify Repair

   Start the engine, let it run for a minute, and turn the key OFF. Wait for the ECM to complete its after-run cycle (listen for the relay to click off). Check if the code returns.

   ECU Replacement (Worst-Case)

   If the relay and wiring are perfectly intact, the internal circuitry of the ECU has failed. The ECU must be replaced and reprogrammed using the EST to restore self-learning parameters.
