New Holland ENG 3060 – Engine ECU: Cylinder 1 - Unclassifiable Error in Injector
Issue description
The electrical portion of the fuel injector (the solenoid valve) for Cylinder 1 has experienced a fault. The controller has detected an electrical anomaly that it cannot strictly classify as a standard short-to-ground or open circuit, though it often points to an internal failure of the injector solenoid itself. This condition will typically cause the engine to misfire, run rough, and emit excess exhaust smoke.

Check the cause
Check for companion codes related to Cylinder 1 (e.g., 3061 for Low Side short to battery, 3062 for application dependent/short circuit, or 3063 for High Side short to ground)
Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Cylinder 1 injector for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause intermittent shorts
Disconnect the Cylinder 1 injector and the Engine ECU to check connectors for corrosion, bent pins, or loose terminals
Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the Cylinder 1 injector solenoid pins and compare it to a known good injector on the same engine to determine if the solenoid has failed internally
If the injector is removed, visually inspect the nozzle dome for bluish discoloration (indicating extreme heat), damaged orifices, or corrosion
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts or accidental ECU damage.
Gain Access
Depending on the specific FPT engine model, remove the valve cover or upper engine cowlings to access the fuel rail and injectors.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the electrical connector from the Cylinder 1 fuel injector.
Remove Fuel Lines
Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the Cylinder 1 injector. (Note: OEM guidelines generally mandate replacing high-pressure fuel lines once they have been loosened/removed to prevent leaks).
Extract the Injector
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully pull the injector out of the cylinder head.
Clean the Bore
Thoroughly clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no carbon or debris falls into the combustion chamber.
Install New Injector
Fit the new injector with a new copper sealing washer and O-ring. Seat it into the bore.
Reassembly
Install the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to OEM specifications. Install the new high-pressure fuel line and reconnect the electrical harness.
Reinstall Covers
Replace the valve cover (using a new gasket if applicable) and any removed cowlings.
Bleed System & Code ECU
Reconnect the battery. Bleed the fuel system if required by the specific engine manual. Finally, use a CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) or equivalent diagnostic scanner to program the new injector's trim code (IQA code) into the Engine ECU. Clear the ENG 3060 fault code and test run the machine.
