New Holland ENG 3061 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Bosch EDC7: Cylinder1 - Injector Cable Short circuit (Low Side to Battery)

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an electrical short to the battery voltage (B+) on the low-side circuit of the wiring harness for the fuel injector on Cylinder 1.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the fuel injector wiring harness for obvious signs of chafing, melting, or water ingress, paying special attention to the routing near Cylinder 1 and the valve cover.

  2. Harness Isolation Test: Disconnect the injector harness at the EDC7 ECU (which utilizes 89-pin, 36-pin, and 16-pin connectors) and at the Cylinder 1 injector.

  3. Short Circuit Test: Using a digital multimeter, test the low-side wire of the Cylinder 1 circuit for continuity to battery voltage (B+). If voltage is present while isolated, the harness is shorted.

  4. Injector Solenoid Test: Test the resistance across the pins of the Cylinder 1 fuel injector. An internal short inside the injector solenoid can sometimes trigger harness fault codes.

  5. ECU Pin Inspection: Check the pins on the EDC7 ECU for corrosion, burning, or bent pins, which can occur if a severe short circuit back-feeds into the module.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent further electrical damage or accidental shock (injector circuits carry high voltage).

  2. Gain Access

    Remove the engine covers or valve cover if the injector harness is integrated internally.

  3. Remove Faulty Component

    Disconnect the wiring harness from all injectors and the EDC7 ECU. If the harness failed the continuity test, remove it from the engine block retainers. If the injector failed the resistance test, remove the high-pressure fuel line and extract the Cylinder 1 injector.

  4. Install New Parts

    Install the replacement injector wiring harness. Do not attempt to splice high-pressure common rail injector wiring, as changes in electrical resistance will alter injection timing and cause misfires.

  5. Seal Connections

    Ensure all weather-sealed connectors are firmly seated and locked to prevent future moisture ingress.

  6. Reassemble and Reconnect

    Reinstall any removed covers and reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes

    Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the ENG 3061 fault code from the EDC7 memory.

  8. Test Run

    Start the engine and verify that the misfire/derate condition is resolved and the code does not return.
