ENG 3070

New Holland ENG 3070 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Cylinder3 - Application Dependent / Injector, solenoid Power stage: Short circuit in the injector 3

Issue description

This code indicates an electrical short circuit in the power stage of the fuel injector for Cylinder 3. The system has detected that the electrical current flowing to the injector solenoid is out of specification, meaning there is a short either internally within the injector's solenoid coil or within the wiring harness connecting the injector to the control module.

Applies to these machines

  • T7 Series Tractors
  • T8 Series Tractors
  • T9 Series Tractors
  • B-Series Backhoe Loaders
  • B95B
  • B110B
  • Wheel Loaders
  • Dozers
  • D95B
  • Forage Cruisers
  • Forage Harvesters

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the ECM to the Cylinder 3 injector for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short circuit.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the Cylinder 3 injector and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the injector's coil pins to check for an internal short (reading near zero ohms).

  3. Inspect the pins on the ECM/EDC and the injector connector for damage, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the connection.

  4. If the wiring and injector test good, verify the injection signals from the ECM using a diagnostic tool or oscilloscope to check for a failed internal power stage driver.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shock or accidental engine cranking.

  2. Access the Injector

Remove any engine covers or valve covers necessary to access the Cylinder 3 fuel injector.

  3. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the injector wiring harness entirely.

  4. Injector Replacement (If Applicable)

Disconnect the electrical connector from the Cylinder 3 injector. Clean the area around the injector to prevent debris from entering the cylinder. Remove the high-pressure fuel line connected to the injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract the faulty injector. Install the new injector using new O-rings and a new copper sealing washer. Torque the hold-down clamp and fuel lines to exact OEM specifications.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector, reinstall the valve cover/engine covers, and reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible DTC eraser to clear the ENG 3070 fault code from the ECM. Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify that the engine runs smoothly without throwing the code again.

  7. ECM Replacement (Last Resort)

If the code persists and both the wiring and injector are verified good, the ECM must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer, as the internal injector driver has failed.
