New Holland ENG 3073 – Engine Controller (EDC or Engine ECU): Cylinder 6 - Injector Cable Short circuit (Low Side to Battery)

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the low side (the ground-control circuit) of the fuel injector wiring for Cylinder 6 is experiencing a short circuit to a battery voltage source. This prevents the module from properly grounding and firing the injector, or it indicates that the injector's internal coil has failed and shorted.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Verify that the wiring harness and connectors are free of damage. Inspect the harness routing from the ECU to the Cylinder 6 injector for chafing, abrasion, or melted insulation that could cause the wire to short to a 12V external source.

  2. Connection Integrity: Inspect the ECU, battery, and alternator connections to ensure they are secure, tight, and free of corrosion.

  3. Component Testing: Disconnect the Cylinder 6 injector and check the wiring with a multimeter for a short to battery voltage. If the wiring is intact, test the injector itself, as a defective internal injector coil can also trigger this specific short-circuit fault.

  4. Voltage Check: Measure the voltage to the ECU with the ignition ON. The voltage across the main power and ground pins should be approximately 14.5 V. Abnormal voltage (under 10 V or over 14.8 V) indicates a charging system issue that can cause false electrical faults.

Repair steps

  1. Turn ignition OFF

    Turn the ignition switch to the 'OFF' position to avoid accidental short circuits during repair.

  2. Disconnect connectors

    Disconnect the main engine controller (ECU) connector and the Cylinder 6 fuel injector connector.

  3. Repair or replace wiring harness

    Based on your multimeter tests, if the short is isolated to the wiring harness, carefully open the harness loom to locate the damaged wire. Repair the wire using proper electrical repair procedures, or replace the entire fuel injector wire harness if the damage is extensive or near the connector.

  4. Replace Cylinder 6 fuel injector

    If the wiring tests perfectly but the fault remains, the Cylinder 6 fuel injector coil is defective. Depressurize the fuel system and replace the Cylinder 6 fuel injector.

  5. Reconnect components

    Reconnect all harnesses and the ECU securely.

  6. Clear codes and test

    Turn the ignition ON, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and run the engine to confirm the elimination of the fault.
