ENG 3081

New Holland ENG 3081 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC7: Cylinder 4 - Injector Cable Short circuit (Low Side to Battery)

Issue description

The engine control module has detected that the low side (the ground or control side) of the electrical circuit for the cylinder 4 fuel injector is improperly receiving battery voltage, indicating a short circuit in the wiring harness or an internal short within the injector solenoid.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series
  • New Holland T9 Series
  • New Holland CR9090
  • New Holland CX8080

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness leading to the cylinder 4 injector for chafing, melted insulation, rodent damage, or rubbing against the engine block.

  2. Disconnect and check the main connector blocks at the Engine ECU and the cylinder 4 injector for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent pins.

  3. With the harness disconnected at both ends, use a multimeter to test the low-side wire of the cylinder 4 injector circuit for continuity to the positive battery terminal or a 12V source.

  4. Test the cylinder 4 fuel injector solenoid for an internal short circuit if the harness tests fine.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent further electrical damage or accidental shorts during repair.

  2. Gain Access

Remove the engine valve cover or necessary shrouding to access the fuel injector wiring harness and cylinder 4 injector.

  3. Isolate the Fault

Disconnect the wiring harness from the cylinder 4 fuel injector and the Engine ECU.

  4. Repair or Replace Harness

If the diagnostic tests revealed a short in the wiring, carefully splice and repair the damaged section using weather-sealed connections. If the harness is heavily degraded, replace the entire fuel injector wire harness assembly.

  5. Replace Injector (If Necessary)

If the short is internal to the injector, remove the hold-down clamp and extract the cylinder 4 fuel injector. Install a new injector with fresh O-rings and torque to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the injector harness to all injectors and the Engine ECU. Ensure all weather-sealed connectors are fully seated and locked.

  7. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 3081 fault code.

  8. Test Run

Start the engine and verify smooth operation. Check that the fault code does not return.
