New Holland ENG 3083 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): Cylinder 4 - Injector Cable Short Circuit (High Side to Ground)

This fault code indicates that the engine control system has detected a short circuit to ground on the high-voltage supply side of the wiring circuit for the fuel injector on Cylinder 4. This electrical fault prevents the injector from firing properly, which will typically result in an engine misfire, rough running, loss of power, and excessive exhaust smoke.

   Ensure you have a high-quality Digital Multi-meter (DMM) capable of accurately measuring resistance down to a resolution of 0.1 ohms before proceeding.

   Visually inspect the engine wiring harness leading to the Cylinder 4 injector. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or areas where the harness rubs against the engine block or valve cover.

   Perform a harness continuity and short test: Disconnect the harness from the Engine ECU and the Cylinder 4 injector. Measure the resistance between the high-side wire of the injector circuit and the chassis ground. Continuity indicates a shorted wiring harness.

   Perform an injector coil resistance test: Measure the resistance directly across the two pins of the Cylinder 4 fuel injector. A healthy injector solenoid coil typically measures between 0.4 and 0.5 ohms. Lower resistance or continuity between the high-side pin and the metal injector body indicates an internally failed injector.

   Disconnect power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the engine electrical system to prevent ECU damage.

   Access the injector

   Depending on the engine model, remove the engine covers or valve cover to access the Cylinder 4 fuel injector and its sub-harness.

   Repair or replace the harness

   If the diagnostic tests proved the harness is shorted, either splice and repair the damaged section of the wire using heat-shrink connectors, or replace the entire injector wiring harness.

   Replace the injector

   If the injector failed the resistance test (internal short), remove the high-pressure fuel line and the injector hold-down clamp. Extract the injector, clean the injector bore, and install a new injector with a new copper crush washer and O-rings. Torque the hold-down bolt and fuel lines to OEM specifications.

   Reassemble and clear codes

   Reconnect all electrical connectors and the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic scan tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the ENG 3083 fault code.

   Test run

   Start the engine and verify that the misfire is gone and the code does not return.
