New Holland ENG 3089 – ENGINE controller (Engine ECU / ECM): Crankshaft Position Sensor A Performance
Issue description
The engine computer is receiving an erratic, missing, or implausible signal from the crankshaft position sensor. The ECU relies on this magnetic sensor to know exactly when each piston is at the correct spot for fuel injection and ignition timing. When this signal is invalid, the engine may experience rough idling, hard starting, loss of power, or a complete no-start/shutdown condition.

Check the cause
Check the ECU (e.g., ECU A-095) for the appropriate software version. If the fault is a known software glitch, re-flash the ECU with the latest update.
Inspect the relevant harnesses and connectors leading to the crankshaft position sensor for physical damage, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires.
Verify that the sensor connectors are fully installed and locked into place.
Flex the wiring harness gently while the machine is on to check for intermittent electrical shorts or breaks.
Repair steps
Cool Down
Ensure the engine is completely cool before starting, as the sensor is mounted directly to the engine block and is subjected to extreme heat.
Locate and Disconnect
Locate the crankshaft position sensor on the engine block and carefully unplug the direct-fit wiring harness.
Removal
Remove the mounting hardware and carefully extract the sensor. Do not force it or break the magnetic tip off inside the block.
Installation
Insert the new OEM-quality magnetic sensor. Crucial Note: The air gap is critical. Do not force the sensor in too far or seat it improperly, as the magnetic readings will be off and the code will return.
Reassembly
Secure the mounting hardware and plug the weather-sealed wiring harness back in.
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the ENG 3089 code from the engine ECU so the machine can return to normal operation without derate.
