ENG 3090

New Holland ENG 3090 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Camshaft Sensor - No Signal

Issue description

The engine control module has lost the phase signal from the camshaft position sensor. The system detects this when the ignition is on, the engine speed is above 50 RPM, and the crankshaft speed sensor is working, but no corresponding signal is coming from the camshaft sensor. When this occurs, the engine may run in a reduced power/backup mode using only the crankshaft sensor. The underlying condition is typically a wiring fault, a defective sensor, or an incorrectly installed/loose sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the camshaft sensor to ensure it is properly secured and not loose or moving.

  2. Inspect the relevant wiring harnesses (often yellow wiring) and connectors for damage, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires. Flex the harness while monitoring a diagnostic display to check for intermittent shorts or breaks.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and measure the resistance between pins 1 and 2 of the camshaft sensor connector. Nominal resistance should fall between 750 Ω and 1000 Ω (or 900 Ω ± 10%). If the resistance is outside this specification, the sensor is internally defective.

  4. If the sensor tests good, verify that the tone wheel timing is correct and that there is no electrical interference or unauthorized harness modifications.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the camshaft position sensor on the engine block (typically on the upper front face near the timing gear).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove

    Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the engine block and pull the sensor out.

  5. Clean

    Wipe the mounting surface clean of any oil, dirt, or debris to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat.

  6. Install

    Insert the new OEM camshaft sensor. Tighten the retaining bolt to the specified torque in your service manual, ensuring the sensor is completely secure and does not wiggle.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or diagnostic scanner to clear the ENG 3090 fault code. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
