Issue description

The engine control module has lost the signal from the camshaft position/speed sensor, preventing the system from determining the exact rotational position of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft, which is critical for proper fuel injection timing and engine synchronization.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the electrical connector at the camshaft speed sensor for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture.

  2. Check the wiring harness between the sensor and the Engine ECU for cuts, chafing, or open circuits.

  3. Verify that the sensor is securely fastened, as a loose sensor can increase the air gap between the sensor and the camshaft signal wheel, resulting in a signal loss.

  4. Look for accompanying codes such as ENG 3093 (Offset Between Camshaft and Crankshaft Speed Sensors), which could indicate a mechanical timing issue, a damaged camshaft signal wheel, or sensors being out of phase.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the camshaft speed sensor on the engine (typically mounted on the cylinder head, valve cover, or front gear cover depending on the specific engine model).

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining fastener (usually an M6 bolt) holding the sensor in place and carefully pull the old sensor out of its mounting bore.

  4. Installation

    Clean the mounting surface to ensure the new sensor seats at the correct depth. Insert the new camshaft speed sensor, install the retaining bolt and torque it to 8 ± 2 Nm (approx. 5.9 lb-ft), and reconnect the electrical harness connector securely.

  5. Calibration/Clearing

    Reconnect the battery. Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the ENG 3090 fault code from the ECU memory, then start the engine to verify that the code does not return and that the engine runs smoothly.
