New Holland ENG 3091 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Camshaft Sensor - Invalid Signal
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the segment speed sensor (camshaft position sensor) to determine engine timing. This code is triggered when the ECU detects a disturbed, missing, or invalid signal from the camshaft sensor. When this fault is active, the engine may enter a "Backup Mode" (often triggering a related code like 3095), allowing the engine to continue running by relying solely on the increment speed sensor (crankshaft speed sensor).

Check the cause
Verify operating conditions: ensure voltage is present at terminal 15 (Ignition On), engine speed is above 50 RPM, and there are no active errors for the Crankshaft speed sensor
Check the 3-pin camshaft sensor connector (e.g., Connector X835) and wiring harness. Verify Pin 1 (Earth), Pin 2 (Signal), and Pin 3 (Power)
Back-probe Pin 2 to test the signal line for voltage irregularities
Inspect the physical condition and correct positions of the camshaft and crankshaft signal wheels for damage or misalignment
Repair steps
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Ensure the machine is completely powered down before beginning work.
Locate the camshaft position sensor.
On some engines (like the T7 series), it is located at the rear left-hand side of the engine. On others, you may need to remove the front engine block cover to access it.
Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector from the camshaft sensor.
Carefully unplug the connector to avoid damaging the wiring harness.
Remove the retaining bolt(s) or nuts securing the sensor to the engine block.
Keep the hardware safe for reinstallation if not replacing it.
Carefully pull the old sensor out of its mounting bore.
Remove the sensor without damaging the surrounding components.
Clean the mounting surface to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flush.
A clean surface is necessary for proper sensor alignment and sealing.
Insert the new camshaft sensor.
Place the new sensor into the mounting bore.
Install the retaining hardware.
Torque specifications for the M6 studs/screws/nuts securing the camshaft sensor are generally 6 - 10 Nm (4.4 - 7.4 lb ft) or 8 - 12 Nm (5.9 - 8.9 lb ft) depending on the specific fastener type.
Reconnect the 3-pin electrical connector.
Ensure the connector clicks into place securely.
Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3091 fault code.
Start the engine to verify the code does not return.
