New Holland ENG 3093 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Offset Between Camshaft and Crankshaft - Outside Boundaries
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an implausible phase relationship (timing offset) between the crankshaft speed sensor and the camshaft speed sensor, causing the engine to drop into Backup Mode.

Check the cause
Check the physical mounting of both the camshaft and crankshaft sensors for loose brackets or unseated sensors that could increase the air gap.
Inspect the wiring harnesses leading to both sensors for chafing, heat damage, or corrosion, and verify supply and signal voltages at the connector.
Remove both sensors and inspect the magnetic tips for metallic debris from inside the engine that could distort the signal.
Verify mechanical timing by checking for excessive wear in the timing gears or a slipped/damaged tone ring (reluctor wheel) that would cause a genuine physical offset.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the ignition, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate Sensors
Locate the camshaft position sensor (typically near the timing gear housing/cylinder head) and the crankshaft position sensor (typically near the flywheel housing or lower engine block).
Clean and Inspect
Disconnect the pigtail wiring harness extensions from the sensors. Spray the connectors with electrical contact cleaner.
Remove Sensors
Remove the retaining bolts securing the sensors and carefully pull them out of the engine block.
Clean or Replace
Wipe the sensor tips clean of any oil sludge or metal shavings. Test the internal resistance of the sensors with a multimeter. If a sensor is internally shorted, open, or physically damaged, it must be replaced (replacing both simultaneously is recommended if age/wear is a factor).
Installation
Insert the new or cleaned sensors into their ports. Ensure they sit completely flush against the mounting surface to maintain the correct air gap. Torque the retaining bolts to the OEM specification.
Reassembly
Reconnect the sensor wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking tabs click into place. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes & Test
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scanner to the diagnostic port. Clear the ENG 3093 (and any associated 3095) fault codes. Start the engine and monitor the live data to ensure the cam/crank synchronization is reading as 'Plausible' and the engine operates out of backup mode.
