New Holland ENG 3095 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC / EDC7: Operating with Camshaft Sensor Only - Backup Mode
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the engine has lost the primary signal from the Crankshaft Position Sensor (increment speed sensor). Because the engine control system can no longer track the real-time rotational speed and indexing vectors from the crankshaft, it has defaulted to a "Backup Mode". In this mode, the engine relies entirely on the Camshaft Position Sensor (segment speed sensor) to determine engine timing and keep the machine running.

Check the cause
Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for codes 3088 or 3089, which confirm the crankshaft sensor signal is missing or invalid.
Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring from the ECM to the crankshaft position sensor for chafing, breaks, or short circuits (high side to ground or low side to battery).
Verify Voltage: Diagnostics for this signal failure are only active if voltage is present at terminal 15 (Ignition ON). Ensure there are no active errors for the sensor supply voltage and that the sensor is receiving proper power.
Check the Connector: Disconnect the crankshaft sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Sensor
Find the crankshaft position sensor. It is positioned directly on the engine block housing, typically near the flywheel ring gear assembly or the main crankshaft pulley line.
Remove the Old Sensor
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor to the engine block and carefully pull the sensor out.
Clean the Port
Wipe the mounting surface and sensor port clean of any dirt, oil, or debris to ensure the new sensor seats flush.
Install the New Sensor
Insert the replacement crankshaft position sensor into the port. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specifications.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor, ensuring it clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Test
Turn the ignition on, clear the inactive fault codes from the ECM, and start the engine. Verify that code ENG 3095 does not return and that the engine runs smoothly out of backup mode.
