New Holland ENG 3098 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-TE (When Active)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) did not receive a specific Controller Area Network (CAN) message, 'TSC1-TE' (Torque Speed Control 1 from the Transmission Equipment), within the allotted time limit.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series Tractors
  • New Holland CR9090, CX8080, and CX8090 Elevation Tier 4A Combines
  • New Holland FR450, FR500, FR600, FR700, and FR850 Forage Harvesters
  • Case 721F, 821F, and 921F Wheel Loaders

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN bus fault codes (such as 3096 or 3097) to determine if the entire CAN bus circuit is affected rather than just the transmission module.

  2. Verify if the fault is currently active or inactive (Code 3099 is the inactive version of this same TSC1-TE timeout).

  3. Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance between the CAN HI and CAN LO pins. It should read approximately 60 ohms. Less than 5 ohms indicates a short; 120 ohms indicates a failed terminating resistor or open circuit.

  4. Visually inspect the connectors at the Engine ECU, the Transmission Controller, and the terminating resistors for damaged pins, moisture, or loose connections.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the machine's battery power before servicing the ECM or CAN bus wiring.

  2. Trace and repair wiring

    If the resistance test revealed a short or open circuit, trace the CAN HI (often yellow) and CAN LO (often green) wires between the Engine ECU and the Transmission Controller. Repair any chafed, broken, or melted sections of the wiring harness.

  3. Replace terminating resistor

    If a terminating resistor is found to be faulty (causing improper bus resistance), unplug the failed resistor cap and plug in a new 120-ohm terminating resistor.

  4. Clean and reconnect connectors

    Clean the connector faces at the Engine ECU and Transmission Controller with electrical contact cleaner, ensure the pins are seated tightly, and reconnect them.

  5. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery and turn the key on.

  6. Clear fault codes

    Use the electronic service tool (such as the CNH EASy tool) to clear the fault codes from the modules.

  7. Retest system

    Retest the system by operating the machine to ensure the CAN bus is communicating and the code does not return. (Note: If wiring and resistors are perfectly intact, the failure may lie internally within the Transmission Controller failing to send the message, or the Engine ECU failing to process it, requiring module replacement or reprogramming).
