New Holland ENG 3100 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-AE (When Active)

The engine controller stops receiving the specific torque/speed request message (TSC1-AE) from another module (usually the Vehicle Control Module or Transmission Control Unit) within the expected timeframe.

   Verify battery voltage and ensure all ECU power and ground connections are clean and tight to rule out voltage drops.

   Look for other CAN bus-related codes (such as 3096: ECM Bus Off on CAN A / Vehicle CAN) to determine if there is a physical network failure.

   With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (should read approximately 60 ohms).

   Visually inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) for chafing, rodent damage, or melted insulation.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Inspect Connectors

   Locate the Engine ECU and the VCM. Disconnect the main harness connectors and inspect the pins. Look for pushed-back pins, corrosion (green fuzz), or moisture intrusion. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

   Perform Continuity Testing

   Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires end-to-end between the VCM and the Engine ECU.

   Repair Wiring

   If an open circuit or short-to-ground is found in the CAN lines, repair the damaged section of the harness using proper weather-sealed splice connectors.

   Software Verification

   If the wiring, pins, and terminating resistors all test perfectly, the issue may be a software glitch where the VCM fails to broadcast the TSC1-AE message. Connect the OEM diagnostic tool (CNH EST) to check for available firmware updates for the VCM and ECM.

   Clear and Retest

   Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes, and test-run the machine under load to verify if the active code returns. If the code persists and wiring is flawless, the transmitting module (VCM) may have an internal hardware failure requiring replacement.
