ENG 3106

New Holland ENG 3106 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: Rail Pressure Relief Valve - Did Not Open After Pressure Shock / Pressure relief valve reached maximum allowed opening count

Issue description

The Rail Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) failed to open when the engine control system commanded a diagnostic pressure shock to test it, or the valve has been forced open too many times (typically 50 times) due to repeated overpressure events in the fuel rail, maxing out the internal counter.

Applies to these machines

  • T4
  • T5
  • T6
  • T7
  • T8
  • T9
  • TD5
  • TD4F
  • T5000
  • T6000
  • T7000

  • 1150K Crawler Dozer
  • 1650L Crawler Dozer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

Check the cause

  1. Check for active codes related to the fuel metering unit or rail pressure (e.g., 3137, 3141, 3293, 3301, 3309, or 3910) and resolve these first

  2. Inspect the Fuel Metering Unit (Y-9000) for wiring shorts/opens or internal mechanical failure causing rail overpressure

  3. Check low-pressure fuel return lines from the pump and rail back to the tank for clogs, kinks, or restrictions

  4. Test the Rail Pressure Sensor to verify it is reading accurately and not falsely reporting low pressure

  5. Check for leaking injectors causing pressure anomalies

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Root Causes

Fix any underlying issues found during the diagnostic checks (e.g., replace a faulty metering unit or clear a clogged return line).

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the fuel rail and surrounding area before opening the system, as common rail systems operate at extreme pressures and are highly sensitive to microscopic dirt.

  3. Replace the PRV

Remove the old Rail Pressure Relief Valve from the common rail and install the new precision-engineered replacement valve.

  4. Prime the System

Use fresh, filtered fuel to prime the system, ensuring no air or contaminants are introduced.

  5. Reset the ECM Counter

Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to reset the PRV counter in the ECM, as the code will often remain active until the counter is electronically reset.
