New Holland ENG 3112 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC7 / Engine Controller): Fuel Pressure: Rail Pressure Sensor CP3 - Signal Above Range Max
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the fuel pressure inside the common rail using the Rail Pressure Sensor. The "Signal Above Range Max" condition means the voltage signal returning from the sensor to the ECU is higher than the maximum allowable threshold (typically near or above the 5-volt reference limit). This condition almost always indicates an electrical fault such as an open ground circuit, a short to voltage, or an internally failed sensor.

Check the cause
Perform a Key On, Engine Off (KOEO) test: back-probe the sensor signal wire. It should output approximately 0.5 volts. A reading near 5.0 volts indicates a circuit issue or dead sensor.
Check the 5-volt reference: disconnect the sensor and verify that the ECU is supplying a steady 5-volt reference to the sensor connector.
Check the ground circuit: back-probe the ground wire at the sensor connector while plugged in. Voltage drop should be less than 50 mV. High voltage indicates an open ground circuit between the sensor and ECU.
Perform a sensor isolation test: with the sensor disconnected, check the signal wire voltage. If it drops to 0V (logging a Signal Below Range Min code), the harness is intact and the sensor has failed internally.
Inspect the wiring harness between the rail pressure sensor and the Engine ECU for chafing, melted insulation, or corrosion at the pins.

Safety First
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Ensure the engine has sat long enough for the high-pressure fuel system to depressurize.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the common rail and the pressure sensor to prevent any dirt or debris from entering the high-pressure fuel system.
Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the electrical connector from the rail pressure sensor.
Remove the Sensor
Using the appropriate wrench, carefully unscrew the rail pressure sensor from the fuel rail.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new Bosch rail pressure sensor into the rail. Torque strictly to the OEM specification (do not over-tighten, as these sensors rely on precision tapers or crush washers to seal extreme pressures).
Reassemble
Reconnect the electrical harness to the sensor. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Test
Turn the key on and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3112 fault code. Start the engine, verify that the rail pressure reads normally on your diagnostic tool, and visually inspect the sensor fitting for any fuel leaks.
