ENG 3122

New Holland ENG 3122 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): PTO Twist Sensor _Short circuit to Ground

Issue description

Signal voltage from the Power Take-Off (PTO) Twist Sensor is being pulled to ground. This condition is typically caused by a chafed wiring harness shorting against the machine's chassis, a damaged connector, or an internal short within the sensor itself.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T6 series (T6010-T6070)
  • New Holland T7 series (T7.175, T7.190, T7.220-T7.270)
  • New Holland T8.xxx series
  • New Holland CR series (CR6090-CR9090)
  • New Holland CX series (CX8080, CX8090)

Check the cause

  1. Locate the PTO Twist Sensor on the rear PTO driveline assembly

  2. Disconnect the 3-pin AMP Superseal 1.5 connector at the sensor and check for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins

  3. With the sensor unplugged, use a multimeter to check for continuity to ground on the signal wire of the harness to isolate the short. If the short to ground is still present, the wiring harness is pinched or chafed; if it disappears, the PTO Twist Sensor has failed internally.

  4. Check for related codes like 3123 or U70, which indicate the PTO Twist Sensor is Not Calibrated

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Wiring Repair

If the harness is shorted, trace the wire back to the ECM, locate the chafed section, and repair the wiring using heat-shrink butt connectors.

  3. Sensor Replacement

If the sensor is internally shorted, unbolt the old PTO Twist Sensor and install the replacement.

  4. Reassembly

Plug in the 3-pin connector and reconnect the battery.

  5. Calibration

Enter the H8 menu on the Central Control Unit (CCU) display. Navigate the menu until the display shows 'Pt' (Power Take-Off twist calibration). Press and hold the downshift button to calibrate the sensor. Wait until the display alternates between 'Pt' and the calibration value. Release the downshift button and exit the calibration menu.

  6. Clear Fault Code

Clear the inactive ENG 3122 fault code from the ECM.
