ENG 3124

New Holland ENG 3124 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Hand Throttle - Channel 2 Above Range Max

Issue description

The signal voltage coming from the second channel of the hand throttle potentiometer has exceeded the maximum expected threshold. This condition is typically caused by a short circuit to power, an open ground circuit in the wiring harness, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

Applies to these machines

  • CR9090
  • CX8080 Elevation
  • CX8090 Elevation (Tier 4A)
  • T8.xxx Series
  • T9.xxx Series
  • TG Series
  • TJ Series
  • Magnum 235–340 (Series 4)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the hand throttle assembly in the cab armrest/console for physical damage to the lever or debris obstructing its movement.

  2. Disconnect the hand throttle potentiometer connector and check for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture.

  3. Using a multimeter, test the Channel 2 signal wire for a short to power, and test the ground circuit for high resistance or an open circuit between the potentiometer and the Engine ECU.

  4. Measure the resistance of the hand throttle potentiometer across its sweep to check for dropouts, spikes, or an open circuit on Channel 2.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Access the Component

Remove the necessary trim panels on the right-hand console or armrest to access the hand throttle assembly.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the 3-pin or multi-pin electrical connector from the hand throttle potentiometer.

  4. Harness Repair

If diagnostic testing revealed a broken ground or shorted wire, repair the affected section of the cab wiring harness.

  5. Replace Potentiometer

If the wiring is intact, unbolt and remove the faulty hand throttle potentiometer (or the entire hand throttle lever assembly, depending on how it is integrated into your specific model).

  6. Install New Part

Mount the replacement OEM potentiometer, ensuring it is properly aligned with the throttle lever linkage.

  7. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector, reinstall the console trim panels, and reconnect the battery.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

Turn the ignition on. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 3124 fault code. Start the engine and sweep the hand throttle through its full range to verify smooth RPM response and ensure the code does not return.
