New Holland ENG 3128 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Hand Throttle - Channel Difference Error

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the two signals coming from the hand throttle potentiometers do not agree with each other. This mismatch usually indicates a failure in the sensor's internal resistance tracks (creating dead spots) or a wiring issue, which can cause erratic engine RPM surging or a default to idle.

   Inspect the wiring harness and the 3-terminal electrical connector at the hand throttle potentiometer for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins

   Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage and a solid ground from the Engine ECU

   Perform a signal sweep test using a multimeter or diagnostic tool: monitor the signal outputs of both potentiometer channels while slowly moving the hand throttle lever from idle to full throttle. Look for voltage drop-outs, dead spots, or a lack of smooth, linear resistance changes. If channels do not track proportionally, the potentiometer has failed

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts or accidental ECU damage.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the necessary trim panels on the right-hand console or armrest to access the hand throttle lever assembly.

   Disconnect the Harness

   Unplug the 3-terminal electrical connector from the hand throttle potentiometer.

   Remove the Faulty Sensor

   Unbolt or unclip the faulty potentiometer from the hand throttle linkage/lever frame.

   Install the New Part

   Install the new OEM potentiometer. Ensure the physical linkage aligns correctly with the sensor's input shaft so that the physical movement translates accurately to the sensor.

   Reassemble

   Reconnect the electrical harness, reassemble the console trim panels, and reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes & Test

   Turn the key on and clear the stored ENG 3128 fault code. Test the hand throttle operation to ensure smooth engine RPM response without surging or hesitation. (Note: Depending on the exact tractor model, a quick throttle calibration via the dashboard menu or diagnostic tool may be required after replacement).
