New Holland ENG 3129 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Hand Throttle - Idle Switch Closed Circuit
Issue description
The controller receives a continuous 'closed' signal from the idle switch, even though the potentiometer signal indicates the operator has moved the hand throttle lever away from the idle position.

Check the cause
Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic 'H' routines (d16 Hand throttle idle switch and d17 Hand throttle Not at idle switch) to verify if the ECU recognizes the switch changing states when you physically move the lever.
Inspect the hand throttle lever mechanism for dirt, debris, or a binding mechanical throttle cable that can prevent the linkage from fully returning or properly actuating the switch.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the hand throttle assembly and use a multimeter to test the idle switch pins for continuity; the switch should open and close cleanly as the lever is moved off and onto the idle stop.
Inspect the wiring harness between the hand throttle and the Engine ECU for chafed wires causing a short circuit to ground or a short to another power wire.
Repair steps
Prepare tractor for service
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage.
Access hand throttle assembly
Remove the right-hand console or dashboard trim panels to access the hand throttle assembly and its wiring.
Service mechanical cable systems (T6000/TS-A models)
Inspect the cable for stretching or binding. If replacing, disconnect the cable from the engine injection pump/linkage end first, then the dashboard end. Route the new cable along the exact original path, avoiding sharp bends or hot exhaust components. Connect both ends and adjust the tension so the throttle moves smoothly and the idle switch is properly actuated when the lever is pulled back.
Service electronic drive-by-wire systems (T8 models)
Disconnect the electrical connector from the throttle potentiometer/idle switch assembly. Unbolt the faulty potentiometer/switch unit from the console and install the replacement part.
Reconnect wiring harness
Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the connector is fully seated and the pins are free of corrosion.
Reinstall trim panels
Reinstall the console trim panels.
Test operation
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and clear the inactive fault codes. Test the hand throttle operation to ensure the code does not return and the engine RPM responds correctly.
