New Holland ENG 3134 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Cold Start Lamp _Short circuit to Battery

Issue description

The Engine Control Module has detected voltage on the cold start lamp/grid heater circuit when it should not be present, meaning the circuit is shorted directly to a positive power source (battery voltage).

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series tractors
  • New Holland T7 Series tractors (e.g., T7.175, T7.190, T7.210, T7.225)
  • New Holland CR9090, CX8080, and CX8090 Elevation Tier 4A Combines

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running between the ECM, the dashboard cold start lamp, and the grid heater relay for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses.

  2. Disconnect the cold start lamp and the grid heater relay, then use a multimeter to check for continuity between the cold start lamp control circuit and the battery positive terminal.

  3. Check the grid heater relay (main relay) for internal shorting, which can backfeed voltage to the ECM.

  4. Check the main grid heater fuses (often a 150 Amp Mega fuse) and the ECM power supply fuses to ensure a short hasn't blown a related circuit protection device.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate Components

    Locate the grid heater relay (often mounted near the engine rear frame or battery box) and the wiring harness leading to the cab/cold start lamp.

  3. Isolate the Short

    Disconnect the harness at the ECM and at the grid heater relay. Test the wiring harness for a short to battery positive.

  4. Repair/Replace Wiring

    If the short is located within the wiring harness (a common issue on T7 and T8 series), repair the damaged section of the wire using heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section entirely.

  5. Replace Relay (If Applicable)

    If the wiring tests fine but the grid heater relay is internally shorted to the control side, unbolt the relay, clean the mounting surface, and install a new relay.

  6. Reassembly and Clearing

    Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive ENG 3134 code.

  7. Verification

    Cycle the ignition key to the ON position. Verify that the cold start lamp illuminates normally on the dash and turns off after the pre-heating cycle is complete without triggering a check engine light.
