New Holland ENG 3135 – Engine Control Unit (EDC - Electronic Diesel Control): Cold Start Lamp _ Short circuit to Ground
Issue description
The Engine ECU detects that the voltage on the Cold Start Lamp signal circuit is pulled low, indicating a Short circuit to Ground. This means the wire connecting the ECU to the lamp is touching a ground source, or the lamp/instrument cluster itself has an internal short.

- New Holland T8.xxx Series
- New Holland CR9090
- New Holland CX8080
- New Holland CX8090 Elevation
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the cab/instrument cluster for chafing against the frame, engine block, or cab mounts.
Perform a circuit isolation test by disconnecting the harness at the Engine ECU and instrument cluster, then checking for continuity between the signal wire and chassis ground.
Check the resistance across the cold start lamp bulb and its socket to rule out an internal short.
Inspect the grid heater relay block and connections for melted wires or internal shorts that could back-feed ground into the lamp circuit.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical damage.
Access the Harness
Remove the necessary cowl or dash panels to access the rear of the instrument cluster and the Engine ECU connectors.
Repair the Wiring
If the diagnostic tests isolated a short in the harness, locate the exact point of chafing. Cut out the damaged section of the wire, solder in a new section of wire of the same gauge, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing. Wrap the repaired harness in protective loom.
Replace the Bulb/Cluster
If the short was isolated to the instrument cluster bulb, remove the bulb from the rear of the cluster and replace it. (Note: On some newer Tier 4a models, the lamp is an integrated LED soldered to the cluster board; if the board is shorted, the cluster may require professional repair or replacement).
Reassembly and Verification
Reconnect all harness connectors and the battery. Turn the key to the "ON" position to initiate the pre-heat cycle. Verify that the Cold Start Lamp illuminates normally and goes out after the cycle completes (typically 25-60 seconds depending on coolant temperature).
Clear Codes
Use an EASy tool or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the inactive ENG 3135 fault code from the Engine ECU.
